Autumnal (Fall) Cocktails

So the nights draw in, the leaves start to turn brown and the cocktail calender moves on.

For me I'm moving toward the Old Fashioned & The Manhattan of an evening.

The Bramble is also a very drink at this time of the year.

Anything that's nutty, spicy or jammy (berries) such as cranberry seems the order of the day. I have some gingerbread syrup so I think I shall experiment with that.

How about everyone else in the lounge?

Curious about the Bramble. Please elaborate! :P

I like the Manhattan's, nice whisky/bourbon drink. Not too fond of the bitters, but we'll see!

How about a nice whiskey sour, or Rum Collins these days? :D

The Bramble has similarities to a Gin Fix or a Canadian Blackberry Fix
Essentially it is Gin, Lemon Juice, Sugar Syrup and Creme De Mure (Blackberry Liqueur) it's served in a glass full of crushed/shaved ice. I usually garnish with a few blackberries or some other fruit of the season.

Now a Rum Collins sounds good, do you personally use white or dark rum? I'm hoping to learn a bit more about the spirit at a Rum festival this weekend.

Ooo! Thanks for the info!

I've always made the Rum Collins with white rum, but I suppose it would be a little more "autumn-y" using dark rum, eh? Hmmm, have to give it a try!

Also thinking that the Captain Morgan might be used to make some sort of seasonal drink, with the spices and all that are similar to those reflected in holiday foods (pumpkin spice/pie, mince meat, etc.) Will give this some thought. Let me know if you come up with anything too!

Cheers,
Paul

Captian Morgans should be a good based, you could then add your own spice and maybe some water, honey etc. and warm it. Or you could use an already spiced Rum such as Morgan's Spiced or the new Lamb's Spiced - which is a treat!

Re: Autumnal (Fall) Cocktails

Anyone have a line on a good "warm" cocktail -- it gets a bit cold in my 100-year-old house? I've messed up every hot-buttered rum I've tried (or maybe I made them just fine and it turns out that as good as a hot-buttered rum sounds, it's really just a greasy mess.) Mulled wine is fun, but I think it is a bit of a grandma's drink. Currently, bourbon and coffee with a little hot cocoa is the drink du jour for cold Saturday afternoons (and mornings for that matter).

Re: Autumnal (Fall) Cocktails

I made that drink last night... I also added a little cinnamon on top... smelled like apple pie... with a kick...

Not bad... I might try it with rum too.
